Polaroid SX-70…I think I love you.

In the wise words of David Cassidy, this 1970’s romance is continuing on and on.

I FINALLY got my hands on a beautiful Polaroid SX70 Land Camera and I’m in love. The prints(the ones that come out) are gorgeous. The colours are yummy and warm and the sharpness is incredible. Why they ever stopped production of these puppies, I’ll never know. I have been salivating over the shots they produce for a long time and now I finally have my own. I haven’t been this excited about photography and a camera in a long time. Unfortunately, sharing my joy online isn’t going to happen anytime soon as I’ve just discovered my newish scanner is crap as they come and the scans are shocking.

I will share some though of course.

Big News for us: We are planning a trip to Boston for July. We will be attending a family wedding and doing some sight seeing. I’ve never been to the East Coast of the States and I’m super excited! Got any tips for things to see in Boston? We will definitely be going to Fenway!
This week is the last before the Canadian’s daddums and step mom arrive from Vancouver. Its the first lot of Sean’s family that have come to visit us in Australia, so its very exciting! We will be doing lots of sight seeing and touring around for the next 3 weeks, including a few days up to the Hunter Valley.
Thursday night is Jarvis Cocker at the Metro, followed by the brand spankin new V Festival on Saturday. Going to be a busy weekend!

Telecom @ Candy’s Apartment

Telecom get stuck in traffic and play Candy’s Apartment. I shoot pictures.

I’m actually thinking a lot about why I do this. I don’t do it for a living, I don’t plan on trying to make it something I do for any kind of publications, I don’t do it for the bands.

As I stand at shows trying to get that one shot, I lately have been questioning why I do this? Why I spend most gigs I’m at thinking about how to get the shot, how to compose something that’s different and interesting, why I often spend just as much time looking at the other photographers as I do the band. I really don’t know.

I love photography, I love music, I love going to shows. I know why I take photographs, I’m just not sure why I do this band thing. It started out because I wanted to have memories of the bands I loved like U2 and Radiohead. I will always take photos at my favourite bands. However, its all turned into this thing where I shoot photos at any show I see now, no matter who the band are and no matter if I even know what they look like.

So as I ponder this now at every show I attend, I’m starting to wonder when I’ll even stop. I’m starting to wonder if I should just stop now. I know that when I don’t take my camera along to a gig, I spend most of the show cursing the lighting guy for being so good and myself for missing moments with my lens.

Its a sickness that I don’t know how to stop. A sickness that is not leading anywhere.

Do I stop shooting bands? Do I leave my camera at home? Tracey has told me that band photography is my “thing” in the past. I spend my days teaching 6 year olds how to read and I’m starting to feel older and older at every gig I attend. How is band photography my thing now? I really am lost and don’t know what to do. Maybe I should turn to children’s portraits. Please feel free to give me some advice. I guess that’s what I’m asking for?
