The Death of the Polaroid

Polaroid announced this week that they will no longer be producing any kind of Polaroid film, which to me seems ridiculous. Ruby Reds + Birdies

By discontinuing their film, they are killing art. I truly believe that to be true. Polaroid cameras and instant film create something that no other film or camera does and by making this one swoop, they are killing something that gives absolute joy and pleasure to so many people around the world.

My favourite Polaroid camera is the SX-70. Most of the Polaroid photos that you have seen of mine in the last year have been made with that camera. I had been in love with the photos SX-70s produce for years and had searched for a camera of my own for years. I don’t think I’ve even owned mine for a year and already here it is about to be put to death. Polaroid stopped making the film for this camera before I got mine, but people found a way to make it work and resurrected the most beautiful camera Polaroid ever made. We use standard 600 film by tweaking the cartridge that the film comes in, to make it physically fit into the camera. You also have to have buttons set a certain way on the camera for it to expose properly, but it works. And when it works, it works beautifully.

Lemon SlushI have 1 lonely little film sitting on my shelf at the moment and I am terrified about not even finding anywhere in Sydney that still has any film left. Its always a bit hard to find as it is.

If you love Polaroids and think there is any chance that a silly online petition will work, please sign here. I don’t think they ever really do anything much, but you never know. It can’t hurt to sign it.
