So Broken Social Scene, Feist and Stars are in town. Laneway is up tomorrow, and this week we saw BSS and Feist. I was suposed to see Stars but had too much work to get done by the following day, so I had to pull out.

BSS could never have lived up to their amazing gig at the Metro in 2006 but it was still a great show filled with as much passion and love for playing that any band can have. As far as the performance goes, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I had done the previous time I saw them, but personally it was really special as Leslie Feist was a part of BSS for that one night, again. I do admit to letting out a girly squeal when I saw her head pop out from behind the stage before the gig.
I really don’t like Manning Bar as a venue. Its a uni bar and uni bar bands should play it, not big international gigs like BSS. Kevin Drew made you feel like it was the most important night of all of our lives as he is incredibly good at doing, but an act like BSS should at least play somewhere where the sound and lighting is up to scratch, and where they don’t have to walk off stage so that the crew can sort the mechanics out. They did it in a very laid back, yet professional manner however.
The highlights of the night for me were when Feist was on stage. The woman is magic. I little dream came true when she and Kevin performed Shoreline together. I really think Kevin Drew is very nostalgic about and in love with his old school family that is Broken Social Scene. I may be wrong but I get the feeling that he just wants to have all his mates in his band playing the way they used to. I’m sure he’s immensely happy that BSS launched a thousand careers but he really seemed very happy that they were all there together, as he noted that we should note how special a night it was with Leslie there as part of the band again. He was right.
Hopefully she will come on stage for a couple of numbers at Laneway tomorrow.
Now, her gig blew me away. She’s such a charismatic and magical performer. We were super fangirl and super fanboy down the front again. Seriously, I’m getting too old for this nonsense. Sean and I discussed just how much I hate attending gigs now at BSS. I really do. There are too many reasons why I bitch and moan, but I go anyway because the music is always too much to give up. So we go and we fight our way to get the best view we can and soak in as much of it as we can and we enjoy every moment.
I said this over at Flickr..she is incredibly talented, has an amazing voice, quaint yet a rocket of power. She pranced about the stage in her shimmy dress and plays a freakin’ mean guitar.
I fell hook, line and sinker, even though I’d seen her before and been amazed then. I even bought the clever marketed scarf and tote bag.
FAN GIRL SUCKER!
I am, I am and I shall wear my knob like scarf with pride. There was a mix of people there last night. The hard core BSS fans, the indie kids, the teenage girls and the mums who really like her iPod ad. Hell, my mum now knows who Feist is. And the lady herself agrees and wants our parents at her show at The Opera House next time she visits. Are you listening, Sydney Festival?
So Mad Manic Music Month(s) is almost over, just got Laneway and Jens Lekman to go. So far its been:
Sufjan Stevens
Arcade Fire
Bjork
BDO- Spoon, Arcade Fire
Joanna Newsom
Andrew Bird
Interpol
Broken Social Scene
Feist
and out of all those shows, Feist came in at number 2 for me after tied winners of Arcade Fire and Bjork.
I heart her and I think you should heart her too.
